Functional mushroom gummies are everywhere right now. But two jars that both say "Lion's Mane" on the label can be completely different products. The biggest difference usually comes down to two words most brands hope you skip over: fruiting body or mycelium.
What is the fruiting body?
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom: the part that grows above ground and that you'd recognize if you saw it in the woods. Lion's Mane's shaggy white spines, Reishi's shiny red cap and Cordyceps' bright orange stalks are all fruiting bodies.
The fruiting body is the part that has been used traditionally for centuries, and it's where researchers typically measure compounds like beta-glucans, a type of fiber that mushroom quality is often judged by.
What is mycelium?
Mycelium is the root-like network a mushroom grows from. On its own, that's not a bad thing. The catch is how it's often grown for supplements: on a bed of grain like rice or oats. The mycelium and the grain it grew on are frequently harvested and ground up together.
That means a "mycelium" product can end up being a large share of plain grain starch. You may be paying mushroom prices for filler.
How to tell what you're buying
- Read the supplement facts panel. Look for "fruiting body" listed specifically. "Mushroom blend," "full-spectrum" or "mycelium on grain" usually means mycelium.
- Look for "myceliated grain" or a grain listed in the ingredients (brown rice, oats). That's a sign the grain was harvested along with the mycelium.
- Ask for the Certificate of Analysis (COA). Reputable brands test their products and will share the results.
- Be wary of very low prices. Fruiting bodies cost more to grow and harvest.
